The first step in planning preventive conservation measures is to collect the information and to analyse the problems. This must be done in a systematic way, with a method capable to highlight the various components of the problem to help anybody involved in decisional tasks to operate in a proper way. Only when this operation is concluded it will be possible to plan a project capable to answer to the real needs of conservation of the monument. In this paper are presented two examples of analysis of problems concerning two different Roman mosaics, both in situ and not restored.
